    returning to the fold

I have been out of pen turning for a couple or so years. I decided the other day to turn some more as i enjoyed making them. I had some pen kits called Slimline 7mm pens, they are pretty basic but a good startup again. I glue the tubes into the wood but unfortunately the glue must have been to...

    A few more.

Hi all, Had a bit of a play.... these are once fired cases with new bullets fitted.... So I started by removing the lead from the bullets, a pair of smooth pliers and a blow torch. Next drill the 2mm hole in the bullet (from behind it self centers). I resized the cases with a reloading press...

    Barrel Trimming

HI, I've had a search through some of the posts regarding barrel trimming, a lot of you use a disc sander to trim the ends. my question is how do you sort out the problem of residual glue in the tube. I use Z-poxy and it just seems to go everywhere!!! I only have the standard 7mm pen mill and...

    Slipping on mandrel.

The first pen blanks I tried were slipping on the mandrel and I discovered the glue hadn't stuck. Applied more glue and left overnight. Stuck solid (I think). Tried to turn and they're still slipping, no matter how tight the brass nut is. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Problem I think

I am in the process of making a "Dawnguard" pen in acrylic. I have turned it without any issues and have polished it up, however when I tried taking the blank off of the mandrel it was met with a little resistance so I gave it a good old tug. When I came to assemble the pen I noticed movement...

    Letter Opener

Just made this letter opener in acrylic. The photo's make it appear all white yet in reality it has more of a marble effect. I used CA to glue the tube in place but for some reason it did not hold/glue anywhere, only found out assembling it, maybe I should try gorilla glue next time. Also I am...

    Celtic knot

I wanted to try a knot with 5 layers of veneer. Changed the glue so the edges are a bit cleaner.

    Isnt it funny how

Isn't it funny when you look at a photograph of your pen you see all the defects? I used CA glue for the veneer in the celtic knot and the same glue for the oval window veneer which looks ok with the naked eye but is blurry in the photograph. I'm making another one and using clear CA to see if...

CA Glue to resolve threading issue

Sorry if this has been asked before. I have trawled previous post but have not been able to find an answer. For some reason, the cap thread on a recent kitless pen is lose for the corresponding cut barrel thread. It does not screw on, rather it just slips on. I have CA glued the Cap, tapped...

    Glue Gun

Do you good folks have any preference when it comes to glue guns? I have seen on the dreaded YouTube a few people (woodturners) seem to use them. When I have looked at them on the internet thingy there seems to be so many different types and power ratings, Do I need to be looking for any...

    Mistral ball pen

I turned a blank for a mistral ball pen. It was like turning glass every time I touched it it was a nightmare. I could not get the cut blank to glue to the brass tube. I made the pen but you can rotate the body and the top of the pen by hand. I have used loads of glue but to no avail. I am...

Well what can I say I've had one of those days AGAIN !!! Yep every thing that could go wrong has. So I couldn't sleep so at 4.00 AM I glued up the Tubes and got glue all over the coffee table. Sod Law

Yep well I was waiting to have a new light delivered because the day I decided to start pen turning again it broke so I had to order a new lighting panel (LED). At the weekend I started collecting all my tools and pen parts for a day in the garage turning a pen. So I found my mandrel and just...

    A total waste of money

Well, I’ve been around wood turning long enough to see some fatuous bits of equipment created to meet some totally unnecessary desire of someone to make others waste their hard earned cash. Please don’t pander to this next “invention”. It’s coming to an outlet near you shortly no doubt, just...
