My nickname on the pitch was shovel foot.
Never had an interest nor ability for the game.
However I do support my country in every activity, so will take an interest in the dismal display our team will perform.
I think this sums it up init?

Jim,

good discussion, and great to hear you had a period of partial sanity in your life although You'd have been better off playing Union. Apparently they had to invent League because they couldnt remember all the Union rules up north!

Fighting talk.

It is reasonably widely known that I was a 200 metre sprinter in my youth and as such played Union for some Combined services sides out of Pompey. I am delighted that this thread didnt turn out as a rugby v football slagging match which is not particularly helpful and fairly devisive. I am truly despondent, be it as a Rugby Union ex player and current coach, that football has plummetted to the depths that it has and frankly the managers are to blame for their stupid, reckless, unprofessional behaviour. And allowing the players to get monopoly money for their appearances.

Heres a comparison. Alex Goode, plays full back for Saracens, was absented from a match last season, a premiership match and the tannoy announced, that Alex, "isnt taking the field today as he is taking his accountancy finals at the University of Hertfordshire". To which the crowd as a whole applauded. A full time player in the English squad who plays for his country and wins five out of eight international matches will earn £180,000 per ANNUM from Rugby. Steve Borthwick, ex captain of Saracens and England has been on secondment at a London banking institution to prepare him for a second career for the last two or three years.

Hasnt football gone terribly wrong?

while I too am very patriotic and might watch a match if England is playing and its on at a sensible time, I do think that the game is 1/2 sport and 1/2 play acting... Whoever it was headbutted whoever in the chest during some game that probably wasn't too important a few years ago fell to the floor holding his face... he didn't get near his face. He should have got a good shoeing in my opinion then he might have though twice about rolling about like a girl. Thats what puts me off of football. :face::face::face::face::face:

From all the comments I've read on this forum, it would seem that those that like to watch football is about 10% of those that don't. So why the hell is it being rammed down our throats on the TV? I've even booked my annual holiday abroad to try and get away from it. Going to Malta so hopefully they'll not be too bothered with it.

We will be watching - not only that we will no doubt have the England flags flying from the windows when England are playing - which is great except we live in Scotland, the land of ''anyone but England'' supporters.
Don't care, got my baseball bat and the new Doberman just in case anyone wants take issue with it :banana::banana:

Sailors Home had just disbanded and opened back up as Kellingley Welfare when we set up a new works team Keith .. They had a great coach in the late Eric Broom ..

When we started out we won the 5th division Sunday league in our first season then promoted straight to division three, won that league along with division two, we then went into the Saturday league placed straight into the second division, in our second season we were promoted after winning the league and stayed in the top division until i retired in 1992 .. Sadly the team has now disbanded but we had a great time playing all over Yorkshire and Lancashire .. Our first coach was Steve Pressley who then played for Batley .. Steve went on to be a top referee, after his retirement he then went on to become a video ref.

After him we had Wayne Morrel and Graham Steadman, both fitness fanatics at the time, and two local lads who then played for York. Steady went on to play for both local teams Featherstone and Castleford along with GB team of course ..

I used to watch the Sailors Home until I went working away from home in 1979. Eric Broom was the coach then as well and some of the players were good mates of mine such as
John Green, Ray Horton, Steve Horton, Geoff Brenton, Pete Mason, Jacko, Micky Jackson. Don't know how we missed each other in them days.

I'm with you Jim and will watch England (though we haven't a prayer) and as many of the interesting matches as I can fit in.

As one of the hundreds of thousands in the 10% minority apparently, (more than that here in the North East) I'm going to enjoy it.

Don't disagree that most are overpaid patsies however.:whistling:

Some big names here Keith, and still walking the streets of Knottla .. We didn't cross Keith because we didn't start until 1981 .. Shame really ..

Yeah, without getting into politics about the game, i can relate to everyone who has posted in this thread .. Liking the game doesn't mean i like how it is run .. But this comp comes around every 4 years, we won't win but if you want a flutter try a few bob EW on Uruguay, i have drawn them out of two sweeps, what odds are that ..
