George, would this be the guy who you talked about visiting when on your travels, the guy who was giving you a few tips? If so it would be a pleasure meeting him ... :winking:
I actually met Brian professionally a few times over the last 30 years or so when he had his plastics factory, he used to make corian and various other products. That's how I knew where to get some without buying a full sheet.
he also has a nephew in the Army, our paths have crossed many times, also remembered as we share the same surname although unrelated.
I knew he was a wood turner and turned to him for guidance, since then he has become a very good friend and mentor to me.
He is well known on the forums as Grump and has promoted this one for you, you would get on well with him Jim he is a computer whizz by profession these days.
He set me up with my first laptop and a vpn so I can log on anywhere in the world from his server which I am using now.
I have learned so much from him in a short time and he has given me so much I can't repay him but he does it so willingly.
I have seen him change over the last few weeks into a sad person becoming reclusive and unhappy and that is not the Brian i and others on here know.
Come on Grump you bloody miserable old sod buck your ideas up and sign up here, be amongst friends and give me what for when I get out of order.
Tell him Woody, lets see the old git liven up.
Sorry to go on but you did ask

All being well, I (we) will be down.(depends on work etc) can stay at relatives in Leeds for the weekend which helps.

Was a good day out last year, both at Woodys & TR, got some good bargains @ TR & cracking banter at Woodys.

Sorry Woody, would have been nice to have another yarn but as you already know I'm in Germany at a Craft Fair and then trading for the following week in a shopping mall over there.

An exerpt from their site although ti still doesn't say wherther or not a ticket is required for entry, I think they just mean this expert Turner. (Who is he?)

As part of our big September open event, Nick Agar will be performing three turning master classes each day. Although entrance on the day is free, if you would like to watch the Nick Agar demonstration there will be a £3 charge. As capacity for this demonstration is limited, pre-booking is advised and can be bought here online.

Here is an update of T/R event it looks like the only bit that needs tickets are one of the demonstrators we have never had to get tickets before free entry
September open event 2013 - Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th.

Turners Retreat, the popular haven for woodturners and woodworkers across the country has announced its 2nd two day festival to brighten up the start to the new season in September.

The Doncaster based store has attracted some star names from the woodturning world for its inaugural event which promises to be an extravaganza for those wanting to pick up tips and techniques as well as bargains in abundance from the many stores that will be present.

Nick Agar, woodturning artist. Nick will be performing three turning master classes every day. Nick's large scale multi-textured turned wood sculptures, created at his riverside studio and gallery in Drvon, have earned him a reputation for producing highly individual, beautifully crafted art. Inspired by many woodturners and extensive worldwide travel has given him a chance to demonstrate his skills to a wide audience. In addition to exhibiting widely and appearing at international conferences both as a demonstrator and a judge, Nick is in constant demand for commissions from collectors, his wide range of clients including HRH Prince of Wales, Dukes, Duchesses and the Royal jewellers.

Our 2nd key demonstrator is Les Thorne. Les has been involved with wood in some capacity for the majority of his working life. Working as a saw doctor prior to becoming Company Director of the family timber mill. In 1998 a change of direction gave him the chance to become a full time woodturner. Les' infectious character and willingness to offer tips and advice make him a very popular demonstrator wherever he goes.

Not to be outshone, we also have Colin Hickman demonstrating the intriguing art of stick making, Peter Berry displaying his woodcarving skills along with Keith Richmond, Chris Pouncy and a pyrography demonstration.

Visitors can expect a host of stalls catering for all woodworking requirements and discounts throughout of as much as 50% off retail prices.

Hand tool specialists Robert Sorby will have a full team out to welcome everyone with the latest in a range of exciting new products.

Brimarc will be showcasing the Tormek sharpening system.

Other stalls include: Jet Machinery, Chestnut finishing products, Charnwood Machinery, Camvac and General Finishes, Robert Sorby, Tomaco, GMC Harworth Heating, Sheffield's Spear and Jackson will also be there exhibiting its popular range of Predator Saws.

Entry is free other than for the Nick Agar Master Classes, where there will be a minimal charge and limited seating each session. Bookings will be taken from 1st August.

There will be plenty of refreshments available, parking is free and plentiful and directions are simple with Turners Retreat located just off the A1 on the outskirts of Doncaster. Visit Woodturning tools, courses, chucks and lathe accessories | Pen turning and pen kits - Turners Retreat for further details.
