    Rotted Wood

Earlier on last week I mentioned I was turning a pen that suddenly changed colour on one half, Whilst sanding a small bit came away and very small holes were appearing. I only managed an 80grit and a 120grit, I felt it too risky to continue, Today when taking photo's of last weeks pens it felt...

    Strange thing

I was turning a Slimline pen earlier when something very peculiar happened. One of the blanks suddenly looked dark as the lathe was spinning with the other looking very pale, I turned the lathe off and had a look at the blank and it looked like burr, except it felt like cork. I carried on...

    Sanding Sealer

I learnt something today, I say learnt but I have actually gathered some info I did not have yesterday and the waters have become muddied as a result. I learnt that there is actually more than 1 type of sanding sealer :iknow: In addition to the shellac Sanding Sealer their is a cellulose one...

    Macassar Ebony

I have spent all day trying to put a finish on a Macassar Ebony pen blank. I Sanded to 600 grit and cleaned with Meth Spirits until the cloth I was applying it with stopped coming back black. I then put sanding sealer on, around 6 or 7 coats, until it looked even. I then tried applying CA, for...

    My First Acrylic

Here is my first Acrylic. It is a Christmas gift for someone. I got the blank from flexi a while ago, thanks Mark, and I have always been a bit reluctant to turn it. After seeing some absolutely stunning work from you guys I decided to give it a try and WOW am I glad I did. I enjoyed it so...

    Sanding and Burnishing

When going through the grits whilst sanding how hard do I need to be pressing the sandpaper into the blank? and do I need to keep the same pressure when sanding with the lathe running as what I do for when it's not running? (I hope that makes sense) I suppose the same question applies when...

    Mistral 0.7 pencil in Rosewood

Much faster at these since using Phil's finishing technique. This took maybe 1.5hr from untouched blank to finished item. Spend too much time sanding though, need to get braver turning down to the bushes.

    Micro Mesh with soap ?

I was watching a few clips on You Tube and see some people use soap and water when wet sanding with micro mesh. Does anyone else use soap ? Is there a benefit in using it ? What soap do you use ?

    What Is Causing This?

Evening all Every so often lately, and typically on the really dark woods, I get to the final stage of finishing and notice white marks within the grain of the pen. This is totally ruining the finish, and although I can cut them back and retry, it never quite sorts the problem. My finishing...

    Very Dry Elm

Hi all, I have a large piece of Elm (i think) which I am trying to turn into a platter. The wood is so dry that my tools, even though they are razor sharp, are just tearing it. What ever cut or scrape i use it is just not working. I have now resorted to wetting the wood in a hope that the...

    Japanese lacquer

Hi all, I haven't posted any pen for a while, but I think I should share this one, because the finish is not often seen here. It is ebonite coated with around 20 layers of Urushi, the natural Japanese lacquer made from the sap of a tree. Sandwiched is a gold leaf. It is a five weeks work, I...

    Heres a challenge

Hi all, I have a Triton Oscillating Bobbin sander 450W Oscillating Spindle Sander | TritonTools.com but they only go down to 240 grit. Does anyone know of a company that makes the sanding sleeves from 320-600 grit? In Europe only.... postage from the Colonies is 3 expensive  Cheers Pierre

    Keeping busy.

A couple new styles of tops I have been working on. The beads are pen blank left overs. Hopefully these will sell as well as their smaller cousins. Also some cutting boards I have in process. Sanding, rounding the edges and oiling remain to be done.

    Micromesh pads question

I've been wanting to try micromesh pads for a while. Even more so now that you guys are recommending them. In pretty much every youtube pen turning video I watch the CA is sanded with the pads so they are clearly a good product. My question is, how long do they last? I understand it's down to...
