Couple of Sirocco Acrylics from today

Here are todays efforts dark coloured blank from Pen Moulds and Blanks and the yellow blank from else where but I can't remember. Only difference with these after sanding with micro mesh to 12000 I applied a coat of Microcrystalline wax, then buffed with a soft cloth.

    Bowl finish

I have a Yew bowl half finished, i had to stop as i came across an internal crack, this was stabilised with CA. My last few bowls i have used an oil finish as i like the look and feel of the finish. My question is what to finish the Yew with, i would like the oil finish, as i said but this yew...

    Sanding paper

I have noticed a lot of post mentioning abranet and other sanding mediums, and moans about the cost of them, why not just use the appropriate grit of " normal" sandpaper,as I am totally new to this I am probably asking a daft question, can someone explain the advantages over normal sandpaper ...

    A couple of new ones.

I had an idea for a bit of decoration so went to the turning shed and selected the plainest Sycamore blank I could find. A few cuts later and it didn't look so plain after all! 10 1/2" x 3 1/2" Horse Chestnut. 8 1/2" x 4 3/4" finished in Danish oil. This was very punky and tore out with any...

    Failed Knife

I turned a letter opener but it got spoiled when I sprayed it with melamine lacquer. The pyrography usually separates the colours, but this time the green and yellow mingled quite badly. I'm wondering if it would be better to go down the acrylic route with acrylic sanding sealer and acrylic...

    Just a few pens

My grandson has an order for 15 pens, so had to get in there the last few days to give him a helping hand to replace the ones he sold as it wiped his stock out...:sob: Not a good picture but I'm sure we will get a chance over the next few days and weeks to get some decent pics. He has got more...

    Pink Ivory on TM Alpha

Here's another present made - this time for my daughter's birthday - her first ever fountain pen. I found this piece of pink ivory quite prone to chipping little flecks out - no matter how much I sharpened the skew. So I started sanding a bit earlier than I normally would so as not to bugger...

    Sanding Sealer Thinner

I have some cellulose sanding sealer, but it's become a bit thick and gloopy. Can I thin it, and if so, what's best to use please? Whilst on this subject, I've found that the screw top becomes clogged up on these bottles very quickly, so I'm thinking of transfering the contents to a glass jar...

    Sanding pads (Ebay)

These sanding pads seem cheap to me but I have not used them. They have grits up to 2000 would they get into the corners of work any better than traditional sandpaper? Please share your thoughts or experiences with these products. Are they worth buying? deepclough | eBay Thanks Simon

    Myrtle Slimlines

A pair of slimlines in Myrtle, absolutely the worst wooden blanks I've had the pleasure of turning so far, but I think they make up for the hassle in the look of the grain!!!!! Lots of filling with dust and ca. Sanded to 600 and finished with 2 coats sanding sealer, cut back then 4 coats of...

    Help needed with finishing problems!

Hi all, This is a long post, I apologise, but I am sure I will get some help on a completely new (for me) set of problems regarding finishing! In broad terms this is about my work piece not holding its finish or the finish simply ‘disappearing’…:noway1: I am making a TM Alpha fountain using...

Sealer & Simplicity (Delta) and streamline comparison

One for you to see the differences of the kit and the differences (in my opinion) of the acrylic and cellulose sanding sealer. This is not a scientific test and was just a botch up in my cave. I turned two pieces of spalted Hornbeam wood, off the same piece of wood (side by side) so you would...

    Cellulose paint pen

This was a project of which I had no idea of the problems I would encounter. I started by creating blank of 12mm square. The cellulose paint was about 9mm so I glued the pieces to build up then trimmed down on bandsaw. Drilling had to be done in many bites as the heat generated softened the...

    Leadwood problems.

Evening ladies and gentlemen, Doki oki, here I was turning some leadwood for the omega's attached and all was well. Process to get me there was pretty normal. Drilled out to the correct diameter, very slowly and with great care. Tubes fitted well, not too tight but snug. Glued with 5 minute...

    Ca coming away from pen
